The majority of Litherland men chose to enlist in to the King's Liverpool Regiment and served in many of the battalions listed below, during the Great War.

1st Battalion
4.8.14 Talavera Barracks, Aldershot: 6th Brigade 2nd Division
13.8.14 landed at Havre.
11.11.18 6th Brigade 2nd Division France; Preux-au-Sart, N.E. of Le Quesnoy.

2nd Battalion
4.8.14 Peshawar.  Remained in India throughout the war.

3rd (Reserve) Battalion
4.8.14 Mobilised Seaforth Barracks, Liverpool.

4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion

3/7th Battalion T.F.
Formed in May 1915 autumn to Blackpool. 
Early 1916 to Oswestry and on
8.4.16 became 7th Reserve Battalion
1.9.16 became 7th Reserve Bn, in West Lancs. Reserve Brigade at Oswestry.  No further change.

7th (Isle of Man) Volunteer Battalion
4.8.14 Douglas: attached West Lancs. Division  This was the only surviving Volunteer Battalion after the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908.  A service company was formed in 1915 and posted to the 16th Battalion  King's at Hoylake in March 1915.  In October 1915 it was transferred to the 3rd Cheshire at Birkenhead and became the 1st Manx (Service) Coy.  On 12.1.16 the company joined the 2nd Cheshire at Salonika and became A Coy. of that Battalion  A second service coy. was formed at Bidstone Camp, near Birkenhead on 27.11.15.  This coy. was later broken up and used for drafts for France.

1/8th (Irish) Battalion T.F.
4.8.14  Depot - 75 Shaw Street, Liverpool: Liverpool Brigade West Lancs. Division
Autumn 1914 Canterbury.
February 1915 to North Lancs. Brigade at Sevenoaks.
18.4.15 with North Lancs. Brigade to Highland Division At Bedford and Brigade became 3rd Highland. 
3.5.15 landed at Boulogne. 
12.5.15 formation became 154th Brigade 51st Division
7.1.16 to 165th Brigade 55th Division
31.1.18 to 171st Brigade 57th Division absorbing 2/8th Brigade

June 1915 Aldershot.
5.9.15 landed at Boulogne.
28.10.15 sailed from Marseilles.
5.11.15 arrived Salonika.
11.6.18 left 22nd Division for France via Itea-Taranto.
26.6.18 Forges-les-Eaux.
23.7.18 to 66th Division
13.8.18 absorbed by 18th Battalion in 199th Brigade 66th Division

15th (Reserve) Battalion
Formed at Formby in November 1914 as a service battalion of K4 in 105th Brigade of original 35th Division
10.4.15 became a 2nd Reserve Battalion

Aug. 1915 Prees Heath in 11th Reserve Brigade
1.9.16 became 49th Training Reserve Bn,. at Prees Heath in 11th Reserve Brigade

16th (Reserve) Battalion
Formed December 1914 at Hoylake as a service bn. of K4 in 105th Brigade of original 35th Division
10.4.15 became a 2nd Reserve Battalion 
July 1915 Kinmel.
Aug. 1915 Prees Heath in 11th Reserve Brigade
1.9.16 absorbed in Training Reserve Bns. of 11th Reserve Brigade at Prees Heath.

17th (Service) Battalion (1st City)
Raised in Liverpool by Lord Derby on 29.8.14
Sept. 1914 in old watch factory at Prescot.
30.4.15 to Belton Park, Grantham in 89th Brigade 30th Division
27.8.15 taken over by the War Office.
Sept. 1915 to Larkhill.
7.11.15 landed at Boulogne. 
14.5.18 reduced to cadre at Buysscheure,  N.E. of St. Omer.
16.6.18 to 66th Division
30.6.18 to England with 75th Brigade 25th Division at Mytchett, Aldershot.  Reformed on East Coast and returned to Aldershot.
9.9.18 75th Brigade  Brigade left 25th Division and renumbered 236th for service in North Russia. 
11.10.18 sailed from Glasgow for Murmansk and then on to Archangel where it remained until Sept. 1919.

18th (Service) Battalion (2nd City)
Raised in Liverpool by Lord Derby on 29.8.14.  To Hooton Park Racecourse then Knowsley Park.
30.4.15 to Belton Park, Grantham in 89th Brigade 30th Division
27.8.15 taken over by the War Office.
Sept. 1915 to Larkhill.
Nov. 1915 landed at Boulogne.
25.12.15 to 21st Brigade 30th Division
24.9.17 1/1 Lancashire Hussars (16 officers and 290 other ranks) joined battalion: previously VIII Corps Cavalry Regt.  Became 18th (Lancashire Hussar Yeomanry) Battalion
11.2.18 to 89th Brigade 30th Division
14.5.18 reduced to cadre at Le Paradis, N.E. of St. Omer.
19.6.18 to 66th Division 13.8.18 absorbed 14th Battalion and reformed.
19.9.18 to 199th Brigade 66th Division
11.11.18 199th Brigade 66th Division Belgium; Vieux Sart, east of Avesnes.

19th (Service) Battalion (3rd City)
Raised in Liverpool by Lord Derby on 29.8.14.

27.8.15 taken over by the War Office. 
Sept. 1915 to Larkhill. 
Nov. 1915 landed at Boulogne.
8.2.18 disbanded at Chauny, east of Noyon.

21st and 22nd (Reserve) Battalions
Formed at Knowsley Park
Aug. 1915 as local reserve bns. from depot coys. of 17th and 18th Bns. (21) and 19th and 20th Bns. (22). 
May 1916 Formby in 16th Reserve Brigade
1.9.16 became 67th and 68th Training Reserve Bns. in 16th Reserve Brigade at Altcar.

23rd and 24th (Works) Battalions
Formed May and June 1916. 23rd at Prescot. 
In Mar. 1917 at Prescot and Hereford. 
April 1917 23rd Battalion became 1st Labour Battalion No record of 24th Battalion  May have become 27th Battalion

25th Battalion T.F.
On 1.1.17 43rd Provisional Battalion became 25th Battalion at Sheringham in 223rd Brigade 43rd Battalion had been formed in 1915 with Home Service personnel of T.F. Bns. 
By July 1917 at Sidestrand.
7.5.18 landed at Calais as a Garrison Guard Battalion  and to 59th Division at Estree Cauchie.
16.6.18 to 176th Brigade 59th Division
July 1918 title of Garrison Guard dropped.
11.11.18 176th Brigade 59th Division Belgium: Velaines N.E. of Tournai.

26th Battalion T.F.
On 1.1.17 44th Provisional Battalion in 218th Brigade 73rd Division, moving to Kelvedon, Essex, became 26th Battalion  This bn. had been formed in 1915 with Home Service personnel of T.F. Bns.  The 73rd Division was broken up early in 1918 and the bn. was disbanded at Kelvedon on 29.3.18.

27th (Works) Battalion
Could have been renumbering of 24th Battalion  April 1917 became 2nd Labour Battalion

27th (Home Service) Battalion
Formed on 27.4.18 at Sidestrand to replace 25th Battalion in 223rd Brigade  Remained at Sidestrand. 

28th Battalion
Formed at Clacton about 22 June 1918 but it was broken up early in July to reconstitute the 17th Battalion which had been reduced to cadre in May 1918.

1st Garrison Battalion
Formed on 19.8.15 at Seaforth, Liverpool and went to Egypt in
September 1915 and remained there.

2nd Garrison Battalion
Formed in November 1915 at Pembroke Dock.
Mar. 1916 to Egypt and may have been at Mudros later in the year
Jan. 1917 to Salonika and on L. of C.
28.8.17 to 228th Brigade attd. 28th Division
30.9.18 228th Brigade  28th Division Macedonia; Paprit, north of Salonika.

3rd (Home Service) Garrison Battalion
Formed at Pembroke Dock April 1916.
Aug. 1917 became 3rd Battalion Royal Defence Corps.

1st and 2nd Dock Battalions
Formed in August 1915/1917 - Headquarters 171 Regent Road, Liverpool [Litherland men served in the Dock Battalions]
1918 at Liverpool where they remained.

51st (Graduated) Battalion
On 27.10.17 the 217th Graduated Battalion (formerly 60th Training Reserve Battalion from 20th Welsh Regt.) at Fermoy in 195th Brigade 65th Division became the 51st Battalion. Early in 1918 the 65th Division was broken up and the battalion returned to England and joined 203rd Brigade 68th Division at Yarmouth by 11.3.18. May 1918 at Benacre Park and in June at Herringfleet where it remained.

52nd (Graduated) Battalion
On 27.10.17 the 233rd Graduated Battalion (formerly 75th Training Reserve Battalion from 12th East Lancs. Regt.) at Herringfleet in 205th Brigade 68th Division became the 52nd Battalion  Then to Lowestoft and in spring to Saxmundham.  About June 1918 to Henham Park where it remained.

53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion
On 27.10.17 the 72nd Young Soldier Battalion of the Training Reserve (formerly 21st Battalion Lancs. Fusiliers) at Prees Heath became the 53rd Battalion and moved to Kinmel and the 14th Reserve Brigade where it remained.
